Southwest airlines bought financial hedges against rising fuel costs. Southwest is the only airline currently making money and ranking high on customer satisfaction surveys. The other airlines CEOs / executives get paid millions of dollars. Why couldn't they think of doing this?<BR/><BR/>2. United Airlines is grounding the 20% of their plane fleet that is the oldest and most fuel inefficient. I think the other airlines will also do this.<BR/><BR/>This means they will have to layoff their pilots / crews that are only qualified to work on those types of aircraft.<BR/><BR/>Again, this is an area where Southwest has an advantage because they keep things simple and only fly one type of aircraft.
